# General information


# Difference between the three app workspaces

The app is separated into three workspaces. You can change them at the top in the navigation bar.

#### **"Songwriting"**

Compose songs and find chords for your songs. Tap in a bar or on a chord in the circle of fifths to start composing. Assign chords from the circle of fifths to a bar.

#### **"Scales"**

The circle of fifths will be displayed traditionally. The relative minor chords will be displayed. Chords of a key are not highlighted anymore. This mode is dedicated to learning plain scales. [**Read more about it.**](/scales-and-modes/what-is-the-difference-between-scales-and-modes)

#### **"Modes"**

The circle of fifths highlights the chords of a key. These chords build up a mode. A mode has an associated scale that is displayed in the staff. Accidentals are listed at the beginning, as they would be listed on a score of a song that is written in the selected mode. Popular songs are located in the sidebar menu.

Songs only contain **the primary chords and parts** to give you a glimpse. They are no accurate play-along/music sheets.

# Colors

The app uses **four different colors** to distinguish between major, minor, diminished, and augmented chords.

If a chord is **not within the current key**, it will be highlighted colorful with a fading.

# Change the playback sound

Swipe up the sheet at the bottom of the screen and tap on the icon highlighted below.

If you don't see it, you must scroll the list of icons horizontally.

You can adjust the volume of the instrument here:

The playback sound/instrument is **global all over the app**.

# Enharmonic equivalents

Some notes like "C#" or "Db", are actually the same tone. Only the name differs. This is called an enharmonic equivalent. "C#" is the enharmonic equivalent of "Db", meaning it is the same tone with a different name.

By default, the app is using the tones with fewer accidentals for better readability. If you want to switch to the enharmonic equivalent, you can do this by tapping the icon in the middle.

Note that this is not always possible. It is possible for (Ionian) keys: \
\
**Ab** (G#) – A flat to G sharp\
**Db** (C#) – D flat to C sharp\
**F#** (Gb) – F sharp to G flat

# Android App

I'm often asked if there is an Android app, and the bad news is: No! At the moment, there is no Android app in the planning. However, I do not "rule out" offering an Android app at some point. [Stay tuned!](https://www.instagram.com/tonaly.app/)


# New app name

# Tuner

Q: Does the app include a tuner for tuning my instrument?

A: No. Instead, you can easily link and switch to a dedicated tuner app such as [TUNY](https://tunytuner.com/) from within the app. This allows you to jump back and forth seamlessly while practicing.

# Background audio mode

Background audio mode is supported from app version 3.4.0. If activated the app continues playing when it was minified.

This setting needs to be activated from the "[**App settings**](/settings/app-settings/navigate-to-app-settings)"


# Display hints again

You can re-display all the hints, advice, and tips you received when you first used the app. To do this, navigate to "**General information**" in the sidebar menu (top left) and scroll down to "Display tour again".&#x20;

Tap on **"Take the tour"**.

# How to compose

In this guide, I'll walk you through the workflow of composing with the app. This is just one approach, so don't worry if your workflow looks different...

### ▶️ The interface

Let us have a look at the interface first. The app highlights the key, which **consists of seven chords**: three major, three minor, and one diminished chord.&#x20;

These chords will sound great together. **A good base for your song!**

### ▶️ Find chords

It is one possible way to find chords by **tapping different chords in the wheel until you find something you like**. For example, you've found four chords you like, then assign them to a line of your song — for instance, the "Verse".

### ▶️ Step out of the key

It may **sound pretty awesome** to use chords that are **not in the key**! Of course, you can do that as well with the app. To do so, tap on the "Modal interchange" button. The app will immediately suggest a chord for your song.

# Start a new song

You can start a new song from the sidebar menu. The song can either be empty, prefilled, or can be based on a common Pop-, Jazz-, or Blues progression (starting from app version 3.1.1)

If you have **unsaved changes**, you will be asked if you want to save your song, before opening a new one. If your song is **not saved** yet, you will be asked if you want to save it.

👉   Choose if you want to start an **empty or a prefilled** song. Also, you can select a common Pop-, Jazz-, or Blues progression (starting from app version 3.1.1)

# Change the key of a song

Rotate the chords displayed in the wheel:

You can change the mode of the song to mi

> Be sure that you are in the "Songwriting" mode of the app.&#x20;

Swipe up the sheet at the bottom of the screen and tap on the icon highlighted below.

If you don't see it, you must scroll the list of icons horizontally.

The chords of your song won't change as the app will switch to the appropriate parallel mode.

**Example:** If you are in "C natural major (Ionian)" and change to the mode to natural minor (Aeolian), the new "root" of your song will be "Am". This is the parallel mode of "C Ionian". The tones which these two modes exist of are exactly the same, but now "Am" is the new root note/chord

The mode is **bound to your song**. If you switch the mode in the "Modes" mode of the app, the mode will be switched back to the mode of the song if you navigate back to the "Songwriting" mode.

# Change the tempo

> Be sure that you are in the "Songwriting" mode of the app.&#x20;

Change the BPM in the bar at the bottom of the screen:

# Change the time signature

> Be sure that you are in the "Songwriting" mode of the app.&#x20;

Change the time signature in the bar at the bottom of the screen:

**Available time signatures:**

* 4/4
* 3/4
* 6/8
* 5/8

# Modulation

**Q:** Is it possible to change the key within the song? So, for example, have the verse in "C major" and the chorus in "E major"?

**A:** Unfortunately, not directly. Though, you can [**add chords of a different key**](/songwriting/step-out-of-the-key) or create your [**own chords**](/songwriting/edit-a-chord), which are part of a different key. Also, as a workaround, you can [**rotate the wheel**](/songwriting/song-settings/change-key-of-song) during playback.

# Edit a chord


# Enter the chord edit mode

Create chords like: Cm7, D13, Gsus4, G/B...

> Be sure that you are in the "Songwriting" mode of the app.&#x20;

### ▶️ Enter

To enter the chord, edit overlay, **double-tap** on a chor&#x64;**,** in a bar, or in the wheel. Or tap on the "Modal Interchange" icon.

Tap the ❌ icon to discard changes. This will revert the song to the state it had before you have opened this overlay.


# Change root note

Use the arrows or tap on the note name in the **first column**.

Use the arrow or tap on the quality name in the **second column**.

You can change between: Major, Minor, Sus, Power 5 (Powerchord), Dim(inished) and Aug(mented).

👉 **When tapping** on the quality name, you can select a specific quality.&#x20;

**The dot** in front of the quality name indicates whether this quality is **within the key**, related to the selected root note.&#x20;

This horizontal list will display chord suggestions. If you have a bar selected, when asking for a suggestion, the app will have a look at the previous and next chord and will try to find matching chords. Also, it will display the relation of the chord to the next or previous chord.

👉 **The suggestions are grouped** in:

* **Top suggestions**
  * This can be leading chords that fit the previous and the next chord. Those are mostly not within the key.<br>
* **In key chords**
  * Suggestions that are within the key.<br>
* **Out of key chords**
  * Suggestions that are not within the key and could give a new flavor to your song.

**👉 The line below the chord** will indicate how relevant this chord is related to the rest of your song.

▶️ Tap on the "shuffle icon" 🔀 or shake your device to get another suggestion.#

▶️ Tap on the "back icon" 🔙 to edit the selected chord.&#x20;

# Mute a chord

**There are three ways to mute a particular chord:**

1. [Enter the chord edit mode](/songwriting/edit-a-chord/add-optional-tones-to-a-certain-chord), then tap the "mute" icon.
2. [Long-press](/songwriting/edit-a-chord/long-press-a-chord) a selected chord of your song and tap the mute icon.
3. Tap the mute icon in the "[chord length](/songwriting/edit-a-chord/adjust-the-chord-length)" editor

# Create a slash chord

### ▶️ **Choosing a different bass note for a chord**

You can set a different bass note for a particular chord. If you do so, you will create a so-called "Slash-chord". Slash chords can sound awesome. You can even create odd chords by selecting a bass note which is not within the chord.

To access the bass note editor, [enter the chord edit mode](/songwriting/edit-a-chord/add-optional-tones-to-a-certain-chord) ant tap on "Bass note":

You can now select a different tone as a bass note. Initially, **only tones that are part of the chord** are displayed:

**A:** Sometimes, the app plays the bass note in the same octave as the chord. Then you won't hear a difference. # Add more chords to a bar

You can add up to four chords to each bar (needs app version 3.4.4 or greater)

# In theory: Borrow a chord

What does this mean, "borrow a chord"?

▶️ **Intro**

Before composing a song, you will select a "Mode" for it. This could be "Ionian (natural major)", "Aeolian (natural minor)", Dorian, etc.

This "Mode" provides the tone-material for the song. A mode is always based on a scale. A basic scale that is used for composing does mostly have seven tones. You can build chords on this scale by layering thirds – or to put it more simply: By skipping every second tone of the scale.

So if you are composing within the key, you are only using seven different tones, and that's it. ☝️ **BUT** it can be nice and refreshing to use a chord that is **not within the key** and, thus, is using different tones and is based on a different scale.

"Borrowed chords" is also called **"Modal interchange".**

### ▶️ **Borrow a chord – In theory**

You can **borrow a chord from a different scale** other than the scale your song is written in. The only thing you have to do is to use a different scale or key and create chords on this scale.&#x20;

👉 For example, you are composing a **song in "C Ionian major"** this scale will be the base of the chords and melodies:

👉 You could go ahead and **borrow a chord from the "C Aeolian minor"** scale that has the following tones:

If we build chords on this scale by layering thirds, we will get different ones than with the Ionian scale (obviously).

For example, if we create a chord on the first tone of the "C Aeolian" scale, we will get a "C minor" chord. We can now go ahead and use this chord in our "C major" song.

You can **build chords on any tone of the "C Aeolian"** or other scales and add them to your song. This is called "Borrow a chord" or Modal interchange.

See statistics of tones in- and out-of-key, related to the mode of your song.

To quickly see which quality the chord has and if the chord is within the current key, the app has an **"Out-of-key indicator"**. You will find the indicator next to the chord:

# Maximum song length

The app has a maximum of 32 lines and/or 1.500 chords on iOS/iPad and 1.650 chords on macOS. Repeats of lines and parts included.

Under the hood, the app is working with MIDI files. Creating large MIDI files with too many chords is leading to performance issues. To illustrate this: Such files usually have a duration of more than 45 minutes which the app does not support.

That's why you might see a warning when creating songs with lots of repeats.

Try to reduce repeats of parts and lines. If possible, use the "[**loop song**](/songwriting/playback-settings/loop-song)" feature for practicing chord progressions in a loop.

If you want to save the song anyways, be sure that you are in the "Songwriting" mode of the app, then swipe up the sheet at the bottom of the screen and tap on the icon highlighted below.

### Available settings

⚙️ **Style**

Two styles are available. One with only chords, one with staff, and optional rhythm.

⚙️ **Chord font**

A "handwritten" and a "sans-serif" font is available.

⚙️ **Font size**

You can adjust the font size from 60-120%.

⚙️ **Rhythm**

Print the rhythm of the chords. Deactivate this if you want to add melodies later (by hand).

⚙️ **Count bars**

If this setting is active, the "bar count" will be printed at the beginning of each line

⚙️ **Format**

Set the paper format to "Letter" or "A4".

### Save, delete or change default composer

You can save a default composer. To do so, tap on the "Composer" input. Type in your name, then tap "**Save as default**".&#x20;

To **change** the default composer, type in a different name into the "Composer" input. You will be asked if you want to save the default composer. It will be overwritten then.

To **delete** the default composer, focus and clear the "Composer" input. If the input is empty (and a default composer is saved), you will be asked if you want to delete the default composer.

# Learn and practice scales

# What is the difference between scales and modes?

There are plenty of scales and plenty of modes. This app ships with the so-called "church modes". These modes are mostly used in popular music in the western world.

A scale is just a sequence of tones with different distances. A mode is built up by creating chords (by layering thirds) starting on each tone of the scale. So you could say a scale is the base of a mode.

By doing this with the church scales, you will create seven different chords. These chords will be highlighted in the circle of fifths.

There are more than the church modes. You could build up modes on different scales, but as this is not very common, this app only includes the "church modes" but can be extended with more than [80 plain scales](/scales-and-modes/additional-scales) which will not be available in "Modes" and "Songwriting" mode of the app.


# Traditional "Circle of fifths"

You can display the circle of fifths in its "traditional way" in the "Scales" mode of the app. Then, only root notes and minor relatives are displayed. A "Minor relative" is the corresponding minor scale for a major scale.

For example, the relative minor scale for "C Major" is "A minor". Both scales have no accidentals. Meaning they share the same tonal material.

This way, you can quickly see which relative minor key belongs to a major key.

Intervals are useful for learning the "pattern" of the scale. If you know the pattern, you can transfer it to any other key.

The intervals relate to the "Ionian" major scale. So a major scale would have the intervals:

A "Mixolydian" scale, for example, the only tone which will change is the "7". It is a semitone lower. It is "flat" and thus gets a "b".

# Display the instrument

Some chords (not all of them) have an alternate fingering available. To see the alternate fingering make sure a string instrument is visible, select a chord in the circle of fifths or your composition. The chord will be highlighted on the instrument. At the bottom right is an icon visible if there is an alternate fingering available:

To change your **musical preferences**, tap on the "Menu" icon:

# Auto inversions (voice-leading)

Default setting: ON; Octave: C3

The app will create an automated voice-leading from one chord to the next.&#x20;

This will create **automated inversions**. Explicit inversions for certain chords are not yet possible.

**What does voice leading mean?**

If we go from one chord to another for example from "C major" to "G major" it would look like this:

The distance between the chord tones is quite large. This is why the change will sound kind of odd.

If we have a look at the chord tones, we will see, that the tones of "C major" (C-E-G) and the tones of "G major" (G-B-D) are actually not so far away from each other if we just play some of them an octave lower.

Let's have a look at how this would look like:

The **C** of "C major" becomes the **B** of "G major".

The **E** of "C major" becomes the **D** of "G major".

The **G** of "C major" remains and will be the root of "G major".

In this way, we have a much smoother transition between the chords.

This is called "Voice-leading" or "Inversions".

You can also adjust the **octave of the playback here.**

# Change octave of playback

At the moment, you can only change the playback range for the entire song.&#x20;

# Use 4-note chords

Default setting: OFF

If this setting is activated, all chords will be displayed as seventh (7th) chords in the circle of fifths. Your song will not automatically be updated, but if you pick chords out of the circle during composition now, the chords will be added as 7th chords.

# Transpose playback

Default setting: OFF

You can transpose the playback and every sound that the app creates for "Bb", "Eb", "F", or "G" instruments.

> For example, if "Bb" is selected, the app will play a "Bb" instead of a "C".

> For example, if "Eb" is selected, the app will play a "Eb" instead of a "C".


# Small minor chords

Default setting: OFF

> To find this setting, [**navigate to the "Musical preferences"**](/settings/musical-preferences/untitled).

Some musicians prefer to display minor chords as a lowercase letter instead of appending a "m" as an indication for a minor chord.

> For example, "Am" would be written like "a"


# Use german note names

Default setting: OFF if you are not located in Germany, else the default setting is ON

Germans have a weird thing with note names.&#x20;

A "**Bb**" is called "**B**".&#x20;

A "**B**" is called "**H**".

If you prefer this type of naming you can switch this setting ON.


# Numerals

Default numerals type: "Roman"; Default Numerals relation: "Relative to root note..."

You can either display roman numerals (`I ii V vi` etc.) or the Nashville numbers (`1, 2, 3` etc.). \
They are basically the same, only the type of writing differs.

### ▶️ Numerals relation

You can also adjust the relation of the numerals.&#x20;

When you have selected **"Relative to root note of mode"** (Default), the root of the mode will always be the "one".&#x20;

> For example, if you change the mode from major (Ionian) to minor (Aeolian) in the key if "C", the "C" will change from the degree `I` degree  `vi` .

When you have selected **"Relative to Ionian mode",** the root will always be the Ionian relative.

> For example, if you change the mode from major (Ionian) to minor (Aeolian) in the key if "C", the "C" will be the degree `I` even after changing to minor.

If a roman numeral is written in **uppercase** letters, it represents a **major** chord.&#x20;

If it is written in **lowercase**, it represents a **minor** chord.&#x20;

If it has a **little circle** next to it and is written in **lowercase**, it represents a **diminished** chord.

# Playback chord on tap

Default setting: ON

> To find this setting, [**navigate to the "App settings"**](/settings/app-settings/navigate-to-app-settings).

If activated, chords will be played when tapping in the circle of fifths.


# Color themes

Default setting: Dark

This app ships with four color themes:

* Dark
* Light
* Dark Pink
* Colorblind (Protanopia)


# Animate playback

Default setting: ON

> To find this setting, [**navigate to the "App settings"**](/settings/app-settings/navigate-to-app-settings).

When activated, the chords will be highlighted in the circle of fifths during the playback.

# Shake gesture

Default setting: ON

### **What does the "Shake feature" do?**

#### ▶️ In "Songwriting" mode

If you **have selected a chord**, or the "Modal interchange/edit chord" overlay is opened, you will get a chord suggestion, a random chord.

If you currently **not have selected** a chord, you can undo the latest changes, if possible.

#### ▶️ In "Scales" mode

Select a random scale.
